International Asset System

To reduce costly and inefficient repositioning of empty containers and other assets, IAS® provides comprehensive local, domestic, and global exchange opportunities. IAS services facilitate an open exchange of equipment—enabling members throughout the worldwide transportation community to optimize the use of their assets and increase their profits.

IAS IMBALANCE MANAGEMENT SERVICES INCLUDE:

  • InterTurn for local container re-use and street turns
  • InterBox® for North American domestic repositioning
  • InterChange for international repositioning

IAS InterTurn facilitates "street turns"—the local exchange of equipment—near ports, rail ramps, and inland container yards throughout North America. Increasing the number of street turns helps ocean carriers and trucking companies reduce the cost of repositioning empty containers. It also reduces freeway traffic, pollution, and yard congestion at container facilities.

Users communicate information about equipment status and location, then exchange empty containers—all in a controlled manner, off-dock, via the Internet. Empty containers transition between import and export and domestic moves without first having to return to the terminal or rail ramp. The result? An immediate increase in asset utilization.

OCEAN CARRIERS BENEFIT FROM:

  • Improved utilization
  • Reductions in fleet size, repositioning expenses, and depreciation or lease costs
  • Lower associated maintenance and repair costs for containers and chassis
  • Lower terminal costs through fewer gate events and shuttle drays, and reduced container handling, grounding, and storage
  • Reduced administrative overhead from the elimination of phone calls, faxes, and emails from trucking companies

SHIPPERS WHO ARRANGE HAULAGE BENEFIT FROM:

  • Sourcing containers "on the street" rather than from the terminal or rail ramp
  • Faster pickup times as available containers have fewer miles to travel
  • Reduced administrative overhead from the elimination of phone calls, faxes, and emails from trucking companies

TRUCKING COMPANIES BENEFIT FROM:

  • More revenue-producing runs
  • Less time spent in line at terminals
  • More efficient fuel use; less waiting and idling time
  • Fewer empty vehicle miles traveled (VMT)

TERMINALS BENEFIT FROM:

  • Reduced truck congestion at gates and in container yards
  • Reduced equipment storage and handling in yards
  • Greater operational efficiency

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS INCLUDE:

  • Reduced port and public road congestion
  • Improved traffic flow
  • Less air and noise pollution, and fewer emissions from truck traffic on area freeways

IAS® InterChange lets ocean carriers take advantage of international container exchange opportunities—reducing the cost of repositioning empty containers. A dedicated team leverages IAS' technology and its extensive expertise and contacts within the container marketplace to identify international exchange opportunities. The team then provides end-to-end transaction support from offices in Europe, Northern Asia, Southeast Asia, and North and South America.

INTERCHANGE HELPS:

  • Reduce empty repositioning costs—including drayage, handling, and ocean freight
  • Return containers to locations selected by the supplier
  • Identify competitive rates
  • Provide complete transaction support—including billing, collections, and container management

IAS InterBox is a secure, neutral, web-based reservation and management system that lets ocean carriers and other participants in the North American intermodal market exchange containers. Established in 1998, InterBox is the leading domestic interchange service, having saved participating carriers tens of millions of dollars in avoiding repositioning costs.

INTERBOX HELPS TRANSPORT PROVIDERS:

  • Reduce their repositioning costs by tapping an established, dynamic market
  • Accelerate the turn time of their equipment between import and export cargo
  • Grow domestic business volume without incurring additional costs
  • Eliminate administrative overhead by automating back-office functions

InterBox enables North American stack train operators to consolidate, reserve, and post surplus domestic equipment—allowing intermodal marketing companies and other InterBox users to book that equipment online.
